I understand and I would probably do it like you if I were starting now. However, now that it is all done, is there a way to get Hardy to boot? From what I'm reading, I should be able to make this work. I get the feeling there is something simple which I am missing.

The only entry in /boot/grub/device.map is:
Code:
(hd0)	/dev/sda
This is correct -- I only have one HDD in this computer.

Is this what you wanted me to check?
