I tried to install VMWare, but it refused to work. Something about my kernel (2.6.24 from repos) being compiled with a different version of gcc than the version I have installed.

You might want to look into that, it can cause similar problems down the road.

Okay, here's the error:
Code:

alucard@thrawn:~/vmware-server-distrib$ sudo ./vmware-install.pl
[...]
Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel.

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your
running kernel.  Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes]

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.1.3", while you are trying to use
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.2.3".
This configuration is not recommended and
VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same
compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.2.3" anyway? [no] yes
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/lib/modules/2.6.24-1-686/build/include]

Here are my gcc and kernel versions:

Code:

alucard@thrawn:~$ apt-cache policy gcc
gcc:
  Installed: 4:4.2.2-2
  Candidate: 4:4.2.2-2
  Version table:
 *** 4:4.2.2-2 0
        600 http://rous.wpi.edu testing/main Packages
        550 http://rous.wpi.edu unstable/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

alucard@thrawn:~$ apt-cache policy linux-image-2.6.24-1-686
linux-image-2.6.24-1-686:
  Installed: 2.6.24-2
  Candidate: 2.6.24-2
  Version table:
 *** 2.6.24-2 0
        550 http://rous.wpi.edu unstable/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I don't think I can get 4.1.3 back? The problem with VMware is moot because I got VirtualBox working, but what kinds of problems can this cause, would you say they are a big deal, and how can I fix this the Debian way?

hi, I had a similar problem

Thanks, though as I said I no longer need to install VMWare. My question is more about what Hangdog42 said.
