Installation woes with Fedora core4
Maybe i have been using MS crap too long ,but I am having a terrible time trying sort out installation of simple software. My first attempt at Fedora core 4 installation went well on a second drive (HDB) but was extremely disapointed with the lack of usable programs for music and video. I attempted to reinstall a full version and ended up screwing up my bootloader, after re-formating both drives and partitioning both I re-installed windows and Fedora core 4(full package install) and found that it still would not support MP3,AVI, trying to add programs such as Xine or xmms has been a nightmare with very little success. I did get xmms to work, but when I tried to add avi support the package comes back and says it did not find xmms on my system. what gives?? I have used Knoppix and really like it, the only thing it won`t do is support my Lexmark printer. I am not a novice, I have been using various computers for over 20 years including C64 ,Amiga and DOS machines ,so on. I find most Install docs included with packages very confusing and vague as far as what goes where and how to do it.

Would you please go to FC4 forum or web page and look for multimedia howtos, rpm pkg sources and post-install guides. there is so much available FC4 support without having to go here and there willy-nilly. Hope you enjoy your FC4.

Thanx lestoil, I did find the rpm`s for xine. It was easy to use these install packages. I quickly became frustrated again while trying to install "Audacity" .there must be a dozen or more dependencies that do not seem to come in the package. why would Audacity not be packaged with these to start with ?. Is there a similar recording package available , I play guitar and jam with some buds and have used Acid pro and Soundforge(good apps) to re-record with added instruments so I need something with mutiple track capability.

Audacity can not be packaged with its dependencies because then all packages would have to come with all of their dependencies and everything would be huge and replicated. So the rpm system is more modular but sometimes you will be left wondering where the pieces are that you need.
I wouldn't give up. Search for you missing dependencies. Audacity is not in yum? Check out the program yum for downloading new pieces of software. I have never used it but I believe it will download the package and all of its dependencies and install them. Is there other software like this for redhat?
You can also check at http://rpm.pbone.net/ this is where I go to search for the mandrake stuff I need.
