Installation problems

Ok, I'm still somewhat new so these questions may be considered retarded. Just help me out...

I just tried installing a bunch of different packets. Well, I don't think that any of them worked. Example One:

I tried installing Xine.

I got the .tz and unpacked it into a directory.
./config
make install

instructions at this point say to check /etc/ld.so.conf for /usr/local/bin (which I added) and then:

ldconfig

At this point I get 'command not found'. Can someone help me out?

Also, if I drop to a terminal & try to 'telinit 3' to exit X and run command only I get the same error 'command not found'.

Am I missing a line in a .conf file someplace that finds these files for me? Someone give me some pointers.

not sure. i've never installed xine by using ./configure, make, make install. i always build rpms out of the tarball. basically, su into root and then use this command when you're in the directory where the xine tarball is in:

rpm -ta xine*.gz

rpms will be built in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS

I ran 'rpm -ta xine<file version>.tar.gz & it tells me:

-ta: unknown option.

I'm using RH9 if that helps...
