installation error in RH 9.0

I have to install RH9.0 and it has already Win2k. I have 16GB space for linux installation. I tried giving 6GB as /, 2GB swap, 100MB /boot and rest as /home. I installed it and after that it gives kernel panic error saying no init found or something like that. Also, I can't give any of the partitions as primary partitions. Already the primary partitions are occupied by win2k. is it necessary that / and /boot should be as primary partitions? How to solve this without disturbing the windows OS? I tried booting through the boot disk but the same problem occurs. Any suggestions? Please help!

can you leave the 6 gigs as unallocated/unformatted and allow RH to auto partition.

If you must do it yourself do not call the last partition /home, just / (which means root) and the rest of the file system will install below it. Also unless you have a gig of ram you don't need 2 gigs of swap. Just double the size of your ram and make it that big (i.e. 256m of ram = 512m of swap). I believe that at least boot must be primary. Possibly root as well...but that I never thought about.

Well, things are going worse here. I tried again installing RH 9.0 but this time I checked for bad sectors, it showed that there is a bad sector in /dev/sda9 and recommended not to use this device. But the windows 2000 is there in that device The worst thing is i didn't take backup of Windows data :( But the partitions of windows still exist and hope the data is there... Is there any way to recover at least only windows? Please I am expecting some suggestions since it is very urgent.

Thanks.

ok. Let's figure this out.
1. You are using a SCSI drive?
2. Post your exact partition scheme for all drives on theis machine
3. Did you run M$ scan disk to check to see if in fact you do have bad sectors?
4. What program are you using to partition?

Yes, I am using SCSI drive... Let me explain u much in detail. The Windows 2000 was installed first and then Linux Redhat 7.2. Then i added another hard disk which had windows 2000 data. So there were 2 hard disks hdd and sda. Previously, I didn't give correct partitions for redhat 7.2. so when i upgraded to redhat 9.0, i deleted the old linux partitions and did correct partitions and installed in sda drive. After first installation, while booting it had both OS in boot loader and when i selected linux, it gave kernel panic error. Windows was booting fine...

Again i installed but that time i noticed that mbr was written in hdd and not sda. So, i removed the hdd drive and installed only in sda. The error then was LI after booting. I thought it must be lba32 issue. I changed in lilo.conf but still the error occurred. Again i installed and this time i checked for bad blocks. It said in /dev/sda9 (root) partition has bad blocks...

I am not very sure of the partitions but the hdd drive had all windows partitions and in sda there were 3 partitions for win2000 and 3 for linux. I am not able to check the partitions because i came to know that if i install many times or start the computer, each time the bad blocks is increased in the hard disk. so, i am not using that until i get some suggestions.

i'll try scanning the disk...

Hope i get some suggestions. Please...

thanks
