I have Mandrake 7.2 I bought it from a local computer store and I can't get it to install. The install program locks up after it reads my hard drives and burner and dvd-rom drive. The cursor sits on the line beneath the dvd rom drive and blinks and will go no further . I have tried the options it gives me but still can't get it installed. I would appreciate any help thanks

Not a whole lot to go on to begin with. First you may want to try a text mode install... boring, but more or less the same thing as the cutsie GUI menu but without the silly windows-esque slideshow. Or do you even get that far... I've never installed MD8.1 without having to use a boot disk.

Also, this might be the infamous Cable Select issue www.theregister.co.uk was on about for months. What are the specs on the machine?

Hopefully this will make a start.

I have an athlon 800 with a tyan mobo. 2 hard drives and a cdrw and also a dvd rom drive sblive audio with msi geforce2mmx video
I also have ethernet for home network to cable modem. The install will not go thru first set up screen locks up after reading the hard drive and cdrw and dvd rom drive. any and all help aprreciated. thanks

That just sounds weird. All of the components are normal... Are your components jumpered for CS or the regular Master/Slave rig. CS bugs some older kernels, and also is know to make installs freeze on machines with even the most current versions of any given Distro.

Its been a long time since I installed Mandy7.2, so I don't know its tricks any longer.

No, this does not sound like a standard problem, but if its choking on that second IDE channel, that's the place to start.

thanks for your help buy I decided to try something else. I put mandrake on a cyrix II 333 I have and it installed ok but, now comes the hitch, after the logon screen comes up my monitor blinks and then I get a black screen, I don't understand, I try the functions on the keyboard caps loc num lock and they all work but I can't get anything to pop up on the screen What have I done wrong ???? I really want to get some time in with linux but I sure am having problems getting it to start up. Any help would be appreciated thanks popcorn5714
