If you're sure its installed...

Do this as root:

1. Run 'Xconfigurator' to have the software probe your hardware and setup up X-windows.

2. After configuration, type 'startx' to see if it works.

3. If it does, then log on as a regular user and try it. It still should work.

If you want to have it boot into X automatically then edit the default runlevel in the '/etc/inittab' to be '5'.

Thanks for your reply.Perhaps I should have explained in more detail. I have X running OK I just want to upgrade to
XF86 4.0 so I can take advantage of 3D graphics in GL games. I have the nVidia drivers and kernel.
Thanks Tim

OpenGL games in XF86 v4

Well.. I had Quake3 and Unreal Tournament running on XFree86 v4.0.1 withouth too much trouble.

If you already have XFree86 v4 running, then you just might just need to install the NVIDIA drivers. I just recently had loads of problems with mine after updating to NVIDIAs latest drivers. Turns out that was only because I didn't explicitly follow the instructions that are on NVidia's website. Follow those instructions and you should do fine.

BTW.. last night.. I got Counter-Strike working via WINE.
