install subversion?

so i have ubuntu 8.10 with the 2.6.27 generic kernel, and i need to install subversion in order to install some other files. i tried this:

sudo apt-get install subversion

and it totally denied me, saying
E: Couldn't find package package subversion.

i have totally gotten this to work before, installed off the same cd and everything! how to fix?

thanks

Did you apt-get update first? Is your sources.list all set?

okay, i did
sudo apt-get update
and that seemed to do something so that it now works. so what is the sources.list file, and how do i know if it is 'set' or not?

thanks!

You can check the 'Settings' in Synaptic :

> > Settings > Archives ....
and see that the four lines 'main', 'universe',
'restricted', 'multiverse' have the "check marks"
.....

The settings are kept in the file /etc/apt/sources.list
.....
