install screwup
When I installed RedHat 8, i did not install gcc. It was listed in the developers section and I didn't figure I would need it as I am not a programmer. Now I have found that I need it!
I tried to add the package and it would not install. The RPM on the redhat disk requires glibc 2.2.93 and I have updated to glibc 2.3.2! So the rpm does not install the gcc compiler. I figured that I needed to download the source and create a build compatible with the updated glibc. I downloaded gcc 3.3 source but could not create the make file as I have no compiler on my system.
So as you can see, I can't compile because I have no compiler and I have no compiler because I can't compile!
So stop laughing at me for a moment and please tell me how to fix this without reloading linux compleatly.
Thanks and you can start laughing again. ;-)

it would appear you need a more recent gcc than is on your cd,

the RPM found there gives me the same problem as the one on the install disk. Thanks for the thought though.

Take a look at where you can download a pre-compiled gcc.
