Install RPM directory

hi,

i want to install software from a rpm or a tar ball. i wonder what is the default directory that i should install into? /usr ?
take an example, i want to install ANT (a java deployment tool), then, where is the defaulted dir that i should put it in? now, i am putting them into my /usr. why? bcz i've noticed that java package is installed into /usr by default. so, i just try my luck to put it into /usr. i don't know what is the correct path to put. pls advise. thanks!

cheers,
yenonn

it's best to accept the defaults and just install them. they will install themselves to the standard locations depending on the type of package your installing. don't override the defaults unless you have a good reason.
