Install MySQL 4.1.1

I just try install the mysqlXXX.tar.gz version to my linux server, just following the tutorial (http://www.idevelopment.info/data/My...20Installation); It can't work properly. I captured a msg. as following:

[root bin]# ./mysqld_safe --user=mysql &
[2] 2414
[root bin]# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/data
STOPPING server from pid file /usr/local/mysql/data/www.XXXXX.XXX.pid
050425 17:11:53 mysqld ended

[2]- Done ./mysqld_safe --user=mysql

[root bin]# ./mysqladmin -u root shutdown
./mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists!

How to fix it? Thks

try running the mysqld_safe command without the user option.

[root] # mysqld_safe &

afaik, that runs as root and the mysqld_safe will run mysqld as the user mysql.

Same result as following:
[root bin]# ./mysqld_safe &
[1] 19893
[root bin]# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/data
STOPPING server from pid file /usr/local/mysql/data/www.XXXX.com.pid
050426 00:14:37 mysqld ended

Check out mysql's log file for more information, including what's really going on.

It's usually located in %installationhome%/data/localhost.err
