install KDE but GNOME starts (may soon lose mind)

Had a new install working with KDE. Used Xconfigurator to try and change the resolution. When I started x again I get Gnome. Can't figure out how to get back to KDE.

I reinstall 6.1 with the 'install KDE workstation' option, startx still gives me GNOME.

Right. I use partition magic to completely delete all partitions on my hard drive. I do a custom install and am careful to install KDE but not GNOME. After install, GNOME starts. Am I losing my mind? What am I doing wrong?

Edit (or create if it doesn't exist) the ~/.xinitrc file and add the following line:

exec startkde

If the file already exists, you'll probably need to comment out (a hash "#" at the beginning of the line) any other lines that start with "exec". Exit out of X and then run "startx" again.

If you boot directly into a GUI (kdm, gdm) login, you may need to make additional changes, but I'm not sure what they are.

during your install, did you check mark to start KDE as default or not.. later versions of REdhat you can change your default in the /etc/system/desktop
but not sure what you did if you did a custom and selected not to install GNOME...
