install flashplayer

Hope I am not being a pest.

I downloaded flashplayer and went to mozdev.org for info on istalling it. It sounds so simple - download, then decompress, then copy libflashplayer.so and flashplayer.xpt to mozilla plugins directory.

First of all I have no idea how to decompress in linux. I am guessing that I have to find the other two files and then use cp to copy them, but am entirely midboggled by what kind of command line I would use.

I am a recent convert to Mandrake 9 from Windows 95. Only go to Windows for scanning and family tree stuff whcih was already started.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks
Rose :)

Hi Rose,

I'm a Mandrake 9 user too. I usually do one of two things to decompress the files I downloaded into my home directory:

1. Open Konqueror and click on the file. You can view the contents of compressed files like this, or right-click the file and select "Extract Here", to do the extraction.

2. Open a terminal session and use the command "gunzip <filename>". I am assuming here that the file is compressed with Gzip and therefore ends in a .gz extension.

Hope this helps.

flashplayer

Thanks, that was helpful. I've printed the page for future reference.

I've installed the thing okay - says so in mozilla help anyways! But can't work out now how to use it to play the songs I especially downloaded it for!

I notice you are from Reading. I lived and worked at Stoke Mandeville Hospital for a few months years ago. Is it still going? I was in the Spinal Injuries Unit, which was famous at the time.

Thanks
Rose

Hi Rose,

You say you wanted to play songs? I've never used flash for that before - I thought it was purely for web-animations and so on?

I'm using Xmms to play downloaded or ripped MP3 files. It also seems to play streaming audio from the Internet.

I believe Real Networks do a Linux version of Realplayer that might be useful. I got version 8 from www.rpmfind.net, installed it and got it running fine. Works well.

And yes, Stoke Mandeville is still there - pretty well known in the UK.

Best regards,

A.

If you check your other post about Java in Mozilla, you'll find my very easy solution to installing Flash in Mozilla.

bax - yes thanks I tried that and it told me "access denied" after the download finished.

Do click on the link in mozilla as usual or type the url in command line?

Thanks
Rose

Yes - thanks! Don't know what I was thinking! Not thinking obviously.

I'll try the link
Thanks again.

Interesting that Stoke Mandeville is still going and well-known.

Rose

You got that access denied because you need to run Mozilla as root to install plugins. So... run Mozilla as root and then install it.

Flash player 6 is a better option than flash player 5.
