Any thoughts of updating to a newer, more current (still supported) version, of Ubuntu ?

Filezilla is now in the standard Ubuntu repositories, so for Hardy, Intrepid, or Jaunty it would be as simple as sudo apt-get install filezilla

correct, like I stated it's not in the repositories until the releases I mentioned. I was just suggesting a different approach.

your only option if you stick with your current version of Ubuntu, is downloading the source and compiling it like the how-to you found says to do it..

did you setup your compile environment before trying to compile filezilla ?

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare

try the directions from your how-to again..
