inspiron8200's wireless setup in Mandrake- how?
Does anyone know how to set up a Dell Inspiron 8200's Truemobile 1180 internall wireless? I think it's technically a broadcom BCM4301 device. It's listed in my control center. Here is the info in the Control Center:
Vendor: Broadcom Corporation Bus: PCI Bus identification: 14e4:4301:1028:407 Location on the bus: 2:3:0 Description: BCM4301 802.11b Module: unknown Media class: NETWORK_OTHER When I try to run the config tool, it asks me what type of connection. I, of course, choose wireless, and choose the orinoco.cs driver, and when I click next, it loops back to the beginning! What the?! Does anyone have any suggestions for a linux newb? It appears that there isn't a driver that supports Broadcom. See this link for more info:

I haven't read an article yet that says that Inspiron owners can't get wireless up. In fact, I've read that many do, and with that orinoco driver. Check this out:

any other ideas?
does anyone else have any other ideas?

Try the ndiswrapper project. In theory it works with the Broadcom 4301. I use it on my Truemobile 1300 (a Broadcom 4306 in disguise) and it works brilliantly.

what do you use?
Hang, what drivers do you use with yours? Did you download the newest ones or stuck to older, more tested versions of the windows drivers? THanks

problems installing inf via ndiswrapper
when trying to install the inf via ndiswrapper, I get the following error message:
ndiswrapper -i /home/david/Desktop/truemoble/bcmwl5.inf Installing bcmwl5 cp: cannot stat `/home/david/Desktop/truemoble/bcmwl5.inf': No such file or directory What is going on here? |
Well, I also answered the new thread you started, but in case that one gets locked, I'll answer here too. I'm using the bcmwl5 drivers that I downloaded from Broadcom when I installed ndiswrapper.
The error your seeing is because ndiswrapper can't read (or maybe find) the bcmwl5.inf file. Check that the file is actually in that location and is readable. It also may be an ownership issue. If your running ndiswrapper as a normal user and the file is owned by root, that may be the problem. So check file existance, location, permission and ownership. |
DO NOT REPLY TO THIS THREAD, I accidentally double-posted, if you lock, please lock this one. Again, plase don't reply to this thread, and have mercy on the newb that is me. Check out this thread instead:
