Angry Input/Output error

Atleast once a month I run into an input output error when trying to use any command at the command line or using Gnome. This is with Redhat 9.x . I have all the updates as of this morning. It is quite odd situation. Any suggestions?

What's the exact error and where do you get it?

It generally happens when using ls or attempting to lets say start the vsftpd, or run or start anything. I get it even when I try and reboot. Depending on how bad it is, I can't even browse through directories, for instance cd returns the input output error.
