Cool Initial passwd change

When creating an initial password for a user on a solaris box, via useradd, the user will be prompted to add a new password after his first login.

Specifically, how does the system know that it is the user's first login? Is it in the /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow file, or elsewhere?

Please advise.

I got the answer, either 'passwd -f username' or change third value in /etc/shadow to 0.
