Incorrect Modem Identification

i recently placed Mandrake Linux 8.1 onto my Asus A7V-266E box w Athlon XP 1600
i have a 56k usr internal PCI modem
i placed QNX 6.1 on this system b4 using Linux, and QNX had no qualms about using my modem. For those who dont know, QNX most certainly CANNOT use winmodems. Plus I paid $100 for my modem, so I am quite certain that it is a hardware modem.
In any case, Linux keeps telling me that my modem is busy whenever i try to use it. When i use Control Center, im informed that I have a winmodem by Linux. I know this is not the case however. How can I stop autodetection (or remove prev config) of my modem under Linux, and force it to accept my Hardware modem?

Use HardDrake and delete the previous configuration of your modem or turn kudzu on to detect your new modem and delete old config.

i have been unable to determine how to delete my configs from startup
using setserial i discovered the i/o (0dx000 i think) and irq (5) on my modem.
during boot, i get a message saying
"/dev/ttyS4 is (oxd000) is a 16550A (irq 5)"
i think this would mean some form of detection
but my modem is on COM port 3, aka ttyS2 if im not mistaken
could someone clarify this for me? is the modem getting incorrectly autodetected?
