Inability of Mplayer to play flv files

I am unable to play flv files in Mplayer. Some people told me to install ffmpeg and select it's files as the codecs. I did so, but it still does not play. I faced the same problem no matter which codec I installed. I tried to run it by using the command line: all I got was garbage and managed to understand only one sentence: "Tivo format detected"

Can anybody tell me what to do? Note that I use Red Hat Linux 9. Thank you very much.

Did you try vlc? That works for me.

You should be able to convert them with
"ffmpeg -i xxxx.flv xxxx.avi"

I downloaded the all-codecs package and extracted the files to /usr/lib/codecs which I assume is the default folder for the codecs as I installed Mplayer through an RPM.

In the GUI version, I tried to open the flv file. Among the list of supported files .flv was not present.

Anyway, I tried running it through the command line. This is what I got.

I know I don't get it in my list of supported files, but if I just drop it on the screen, or use all files as a search, it will load up just fine. I usually then use mencoder to convert them into .mp4 files for my ipod.

Well, I can see the file under All Files mode. But I can't play it. This is why I displayed the command line output.

I unistalled the rpm, downloaded the source and compiled it. The flv files work properly now. Can someone tell me why compiling from the source did the trick while installing from the rpm did not. Thanks in advance.
