In Gnome. How do you stop it opening a new window every time you double click?

ok, this is a strange question but im asking because it drives me insaine! When ever i double click on something (say im browsing through files, i double click on a new folder and it opens in a new window). I REALLY hate this, i end up with my screen totally filled with open windows that i actually dont want!

Can anyone help me? aparently it is in the settings somewhere but i have no clue where. can anyone PLEASE help me? i would love you for ever if you can sort this problem out or give me some advice.

Thanks in advance, Ben.

on the application menu, go to Preferences -> More preferences -> File management. Then on the Behaviour tab, uncheck the "Open activated item in a new Window".
