Improper GL surface creation in new ATI Proprietary Drivers, please help!

In my quest for getting all my hardware nuances right, there seems to be one I can't quite get. I have recently installed the new ATI proprietary drivers on my Dell Inspiron 8600. It is running on an external LG Flatron L1920P monitor. At first, I couldn't get the drivers to work at all, but then I fixed my refresh rates, and the like, and it seemed to work. But now I have a problem. I set up the ATI drivers according to direction, and now, only some GL surfaces are drawn. Games like TORCS do not draw the menus. Additionally, some of my screensavers (I use these as benchmarks to tell if HW acceleration is on), will not start, or even load setup options, yet other GL ones will work fine. Does anyone have any idea why only some GL surfaces would be drawn but others would not? The only thing I can think of is that maybe the libraries aren't correct (hence the placement in software, and not hardware.)

I had similar difficulties with getting some screensavers to work - used them the same as yourself. Problem was I didn't have /dev/shm mounted as tmpfs.
