Importing Pictures on Ipod Video

I recently bought Ipod Video 30 GB. I am using SM 3.4.3 and can successfuly transfer MP3 Music into my Ipod using gtkPod. I haven't tried the ITunes since I've given up my MS OS months ago. Now my problem is that I can't import photos. I have jpegs and bmps. I tried to drag it down in gtkPod. But it just won't work, and it says "Some files are unsuccessfully saved". I also tried browsing the Ipod folders and just saved some pics on the Photos directory but still I can't see them on the player.

I am also planning to import videos (most are in avi format). Someone told me that I should use handbrake. I've downloaded the source and issued the command ./configure but each time I type in "jam" nothing happened. What are my options? Is there another application to ease importing photos and videos.

I can't even convert avi to a dvd. Help me..

I have an iPod Shuffle so I might not be of much help with videos or photos, but you said you did "./configure" and then "nothing happened". Did you do "make" after the configure? Doing "./configure" just configures the needed options for the compiler, and "make" compiles the program (after which a "make install" usually installs the program).

The reason why you can't simply copy the images to the directories on the iPod is that (afaik) iPod has a database of somekind that it uses to store information about the contents of the player, so the files need to be transferred through some app. Well something like this anyway. If GTKpod doesn't support transferring images and/or videos, you could be out of luck (isn't iPod Video quite a new one?), since that's the best iPod app for Linux I know of..maybe you just need to wait for a while or use iTunes.

By the way, did your player "just work", so you didn't have to use it with the Windows/mac iTunes first time? I've heard somewhere iPods need to be formatted with iTunes first to make them work under other apps..though I could be wrong or outdated.

Yup. It worked perfectly after I plugged it in gtkPod. Though the filesystem is Windows (FAT 32 I suppose). What I also notice is that the total capacity is 27 GB instead of 30 GB. Does the IPOD using the other 3GB for its system file?

Videos on the video ipod have to be in the mp4 (m4a) format. Then gtkPod will import them as long as it has the mp4 (acc) plugin.

the difficult thing here is converting videos into the mp4 format.

I'm not sure about pictures though, As I don't look at pictures on my video...

rockbox supports drag and drop for pictures and music- but does not support video (yet)
