Importing a vmware virtual machine file vi Vmware Server 2.0.2

Hi there --

I completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.

I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task? Thanks.

Hi there,

Can you please explain in a bit detail as to what you are trying to do here.

Hi there --

The virtual machine in question contains the operating system, Fedora Core 14 64-bit, and application, ZendTo Server, preconfigured in one package. It is designed to be run as its own server, complete with hostname and address, upon boot.

What I am trying to do is get the VMWare server to recognize it as a virtual machine, and to do so I need to import the virtual machine. This can be done with VMWare workstation, but I do not have that available. I was informed the virtual machine will operate within the VMWare server application.

How can I get the VMWare Server console to be able to manage the virtual machine?

Alright. As I can understand you have a .vmx file which you want vmware server to recognize. You have installed VMware on the host OS but you do not see vmware player to start this virtual machine.

Did you run vmware-config.pl after installing vmware because without that vmware is not configured to run on the system.

Hi there --

I did run the vmware-config.pl script after the installation of the vmware server, and the application is configured to work with the operating system. The server was installation was done via an rpm package. I was able to start the vmware server console. At this point I need the server to recognize the vmx file.

I just noticed that you said you installed vmware server. VMware server does not come with VMware Player, it comes with VMware workstation. If you are able to launch VMWare then you should be able to open virtual machine using File --> Open and then location of the virtual machine file.
