Import Evolution Contacts into Evolution?

I just upgraded from RH 9 to RHEL WS via a fresh install. I saved off my ~/evolution directory before doing the install. In RH 9 I was using Evolution 1.4.6. RHEL WS comes with Evolution 1.4.5.

I have been able to move my mail over, but when I copy the ~/evolution/local/Contacts directory over, Evolution is unable to see the contacts from my previous setup. I can add new contacts, but the existing contacts are invisible. Am I missing something? I can't do an import since Evolution's own contacts file format is not one of the recognized import formats. I have a lot of contacts so an automatic way to do this will save me much aggravation and typos.

Thanks for any help!

I think you best bet would be to upgrade to (or return to, depending on how you want to look at it) Evolution version 1.4.6. Any well designed program will be backwards compatible, so that files created by an older version of the program can be opened in the newer version, but your situation is the opposite, and it shouldn't be that surprising if v1.4.5 balks at opening a file created by v1.4.6 (Similar example: During a software upgrade at a previous company, people who were still using the the Windows 98 version of Word were unable to open documents created by the XP version of Word.) Evidently Ximian has made some changes between 1.4.5 and 1.4.6 to either the file format of the storage method for the Contacts. I don't know that for a fact, but based on your description it sure sounds like it, and thus to answer your question, I'd say No, you're not missing anything, it's just that you've just got to get back to v1.4.6 to solve the problem. -- J.W.

I know this is an old post, but here's a new reply anyway...

I had the same problem as geezjan, but trying to get my contacts from the same version (1.4.6 ---> 1.4.6) off of a backup cd because I just recently did a reinstall of my distro. So it seems that backwards compatability may not be the issue. Any thoughts?
