imlib install problem

Hi,
I'm trying to configure gtk canvas, which requires imlib (I need gtk canvas to install an application called OpenMusic). However, when I try and configure at the end it says the following -

checking for imlib-config... /usr/bin/imlib-config
checking for IMLIB - version >= 1.9... no
*** Could not run IMLIB test program, checking why...
*** The test program compiled, but did not run. This usually means
*** that the run-time linker is not finding IMLIB or finding the wrong
*** version of IMLIB. If it is not finding IMLIB, you'll need to set your
*** LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable, or edit /etc/ld.so.conf to point
*** to the installed location Also, make sure you have run ldconfig if that
*** is required on your system
***
*** If you have an old version installed, it is best to remove it, although
*** you may also be able to get things to work by modifying LD_LIBRARY_PATH
checking for imlib-config... (cached) /usr/bin/imlib-config

I installed imlib-1.9.4 with synaptic, so it's definitely there. Initially I installed it by command line, then when I encountered this problem I removed it and reinstalled with synaptic. I'm pretty much a newbie, running Ubuntu through VMware to 'test the waters'! Would be grateful if someone could offer some help with this.

type ' /usr/bin/imlib-config --version ' and see what it says.

Hi Brian,
Thanks - I did that, and I got back version 1.9.4.

I've been installing a lot of stuff by hand, without realising that a lot (if not all?) of the stuff I need is already on ubuntu, or can be easily installed through Synaptic. For instance, imlib is there, but I initially installed by hand. Maybe that's the problem? Also, is there a difference between gtk and libgtk (or atk and libatk)? I got a similar problem to the one I had with imlib when I tried to configure cairo -

*** 'pkg-config --modversion glib-2.0' returned 2.0.1, but GLIB (2.8.3)
*** was found! If pkg-config was correct, then it is best
*** to remove the old version of GLib. You may also be able to fix the error
*** by modifying your LD_LIBRARY_PATH enviroment variable, or by editing
*** /etc/ld.so.conf. Make sure you have run ldconfig if that is
*** required on your system.
*** If pkg-config was wrong, set the environment variable PKG_CONFIG_PATH
*** to point to the correct configuration files
no
configure: error:
*** GLIB 2.0.0 or better is required. The latest version of
*** GLIB is always available from ftp://ftp.gtk.org/.

(Sorry, couldn't insert the above as code as I was editing.)

I'd earlier configured and installed glib by hand. In fact, I've been reconfiguring and reinstalling a lot of stuff, out of frustration - beginning to think that this causes problems!
