Unhappy Images on lyx

Hi there

I am a new lyx user and have been having problems with images. Some of my images look very unsatisfactory when printed, with smudged writings etc. I have a variety of image types in my document, these being:

- Images copied and pasted from other pdf files
- Images I have drawn in microsoft word (sorry I know some linux users really don't like microsoft)

I have been inserting all the above types of images into adobe photoshop to add the text and then saved them as JPG and EPS files.

Then I tried inserting both JPG and EPS files into my lyx document and neither of the two have shown nice presentable results when printed as pdf.

I would be greatful if someone gives me a few hints on the best format images should be when inserted into lyx in order to give a sharp and professional result when printed in pdf form. I need this for my PhD report.
If drawing images in microsoft word is not helpful I have the office.org Draw program too, would that be better?

I have one more question
I have inserted an image in a table and then I want to put the figure number and label under it. When I put normal float figure under the table it gives a large distance between the table and figure label. I tried putting figure float on a row at the bottom of the table but lyx gives me errors.

I would appreciate some help.

I suggested a solution in your intro thread: I quote my reply.

Try increasing the DPI resolution of the images. By default they may be 72 DPI. Try increasing it to 96 or 144 DPI. That might help.

Otherwise use a vector graphic format that is compatible with LyX (that is LaTeX frontend) to store the images (e.g. PostScript).

Personally I use Dia to draw my diagrams and convert them to high resolution Postscript images to use with my LaTeX documents. Dia is very useful to draw diagrams quickly with its grid feature and drawing elements. Give it a try. It's very good.

Thank you Harishankar

I will try to increase the DPI when I save the photoshop file as JPG. Hopefully it should do the trick.

I have the program 'xfig' installed in my computer which looks good too. The problem is that althought the computer is for my sole use only, the college I am in control what is installed on it. I may try getting Dia at home but it is better to use the tools in college where the rest of my work is.

Yes. The print quality is determined by the DPI.

The trick is to determine a suitable DPI for all your print work and stick to the same value for all your images. This will give good consistency in your document.

Maybe you could improve this using the minipage environment. In this way you divide your page in multiple sub-pages.

Goood Luck
