imagemagick vs graphicsmagick resizing aspect ratio

I have both installed, no big deal (NBD), but I am trying to figure out how to just resize a load of images like in Gimp, if one just reset the width the height will automatically adjust itself to the proper size keeping the aspect ratio of the image. I have yet to find or figure out how to do this with either one of these programs, imagemagick or graphicsmagick.

imagemagick does -resize x% but that is just ballparking it, has any one already figured out how to use specific number for a width size and letting the program do the height?

I'd appreciate a share in how to's on this. or perhaps a different program that can do a batch way of running a bunch at a pre-set width letting it do the height to the proper aspect ratio, so it will not look squashed in anyway.

does Gimp do bach files with preset width, setting height to the proper size?

thanks
