Image screensaver

I've been looking around for an alternate to the built in KDE image screensaver, as whenever I try to set it to rotate through an extremely large collection of images I have together it messes up, making it impossible to edit the configuration or turn on the screensaver. I have not been able to find an easy solution to this.

Has anyone else ever had this problem with this screensaver? If so, were you able to fix it somehow? Or is there just a replacement screensaver I can find online.

Is there a config file for that screensaver somewhere I can possibly tweak?

You could install xscreensaver. Here is a short write up.

About:
XScreenSaver is a modular screen saver and locker for the X Window System. It is highly customizable and allows the use of any program that can draw on the root window as a display mode. More than 190 display modes are included in this package.

I installed it, and it works for me.

It was installed, but it seems the screensaver is not part of the Xscreensaver package, but part of KDE. Is there another seperate pic screensaver in the Xscreensaver collection that I'm just not seeing?

Xscreensaver is not part of KDE. Have a look at this link. http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/

You will find documsentation, download etc. and how to install and run it. It will run on any x windows desktop.

I know that it's not part of KDE, that's not what I said. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the xscreensaver package with mandrakes system, but it does not ever removed THAT screensaver, leading me to believe it's not actually a part of the xscreensaver collection.

After re-reading all your posts, it sounds like you are having trouble with the screen saver ( not xscreensaver, a seperate package ) that comes with KDE. Is that correct? Sorry for the confusion.

Yes. It's not part of Xscreensaver at all. It's a KDE screensaver from what I can tell. I am simply trying to find some package such as Xscreensaver's that has another image screensaver in it.

I have spent some time researching this, and I can not find a way to add images to the built in KDE screen savers either.

There is a little information in the help. If you open up the Control Center where you configure the KDE screen saver, and click on help, you will find some information.

You may also want to check out www.kde.org. They have documentation on KDE and all the applications there. I could not find anything useful for the screen saver.

I did some googling, the general consensus there is the KDE screen saver is not very good, and is broken. (not my words).

Every where I looked the recondition is to install Xscreensaver. They have a useful web site also.

Here is the URL http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/

Have a look through the FAQ's. There is one there on how to to set up Xscreensaver to run in place of the KDE screensaver. I did what it says, and it works. I made an desktop icon for lock immediately. That option is not shown on the gui xscreensaver-demo.

I think this is all the help I can offer. Hope this helps you out.

Thanks a bunch. I didn't realize there was a GLSlideShow, and I had never really looked through it much with the Xscreensaver demo tool, mainly sticking to KDE's screensaver manager. But yea, that hanlded it perfectly, thanks!
