Image Manipulation, Annotation with ImageMagick

I have recently extended my interest in gardening to foraging wild edibles. In the course of that endeavor I have been taking numerous .jpgs with my phone while hiking. Most of these pictures consist of a wild jumble of green leaves and background foliage.
In order to better differentiate one plant from another I am trying to mark them digitally with arrows, text boxes, etc. I've used IM to create arrow .gifs of different colors and orientations and tried using composite and -gravity to position them but am not getting the precision I need.
Anyone have any links, suggestions, different software perhaps? Thanks.

Haven't done a whole lot of this but when I worked on this I found the "mogrify" tool with IM has many many options. If you run "man mogrify" you might get some ideas. For example I see it has one option listed to sharpen images:

-unsharp geometry sharpen the image

@MensaWater Thanks for the reply. I ended up using Inkscape to draw on the images freehand. IM has a bewildering number of options for someone who only uses it occasionally.

I marked the post solved because my particular need has been met however if anyone has any good info on using IM for this purpose feel free to chime in.
