Image dump / Text-to-bin utility

1. Is there any command-line utility which can take an image file in a well-known format (eg gif, png, bmp), print the dimensions/info and dump the raw bytes and palette?

2. Is there a utility which can take a text string and output to stdout the binary representation of the string (I dont mean 0s and 1s here, I mean the actual byte encoding) in a specified endian order?

1) something like "file", or a progam from the "imagemagic" package will do.

2) perhaps a hexview program? I'm not sure about this one.

after looking in the imagemagic package I didn't find anything useful too recently I found the 'convert' program, but I was expecting a little more from imagemagic.

After some hunting, I managed to stumble upon netpbm, which does more or less what I want.

As for the 2nd, I couldn't find anything, so I just hacked up my own little app.
