ok this is definetly a pebkac situation...

during a scrambled attempt to remove unnecessary programs using "pirut" I accidentally un-installed gnome. the previous posts' tip was how I determined this (using "switchdesk" ) so once I realised I just hopped back in "pirut" and reinstalled gnome....all better

commandline:

yum install switchdesk
yum install switchdesk-gui
switchdesk-gui

(realised I was an idiot when I didnt see gnome as an option)

pirut

(reinstalled Gnome and all better)

thanks for the tip
