Welcome to LQ.

You can type in whatever commands you want once you are logged in.

What do you want to do with your system?

Like david_ross says we can help you out a lot more if you tell us how you want to use linux. Do you want to run it as a desktop OS or do you want to run servers. What background do you have with OS's? Windows, Mac?

If your looking for more of a desktop OS and want a Graphic Interface at the command type "startx" at the command prompt after you log in.

Code:
if i want to be a sever what do i type
Well, for your linux box to be a server, you need some services running waiting for requests like:

apache -> webserver
sendmail -> mail server
bind -> DNS

and the list goes on. There's no button that you click for your linux box to BECOME a server.

Code:
im new to linux and just want to look at the way it works
Well, this depends on how much you *really* want to know how linux works. There is a steep learning curve from windows to linux. However, once you overcome this obstacle the weeds start to clear out of your way and you start understanding more in detail of how the underlying structure of how systems work. The only advice I can give you is keep playing around with linux and don't give up. You will start to lose hair once you start compiling programs and resolve dependencies. A lot of curse words will come out of your mouth and whatnot. But don't give up! Plus, we're here to help if you have questions.

Code:
is linux freeee
Yup! However, to an extent. One is Redhat Enterprise which is not free and variants like that.
