What exactly are you installing? Is it a file with a .rpm extension, or where you just using the Software Management module? Or what?

You should be able to browse to the file using your file manager. You should now see a screen with various things on it. Click on the button that says 'Install With YaST'. Once you have typed in your root password, a YaST window should open up. If you do not have any dependency conflicts, you should be able to click 'Accept' and it will install fine.

im sure SOMETHING happens when you type in the password, no? nothing at all? did you, as said, type in the 'root' password, not your user password?

You need to type in the root password.

Another way to install an rpm is to enter into the konsole shell: sudo yast -i packagename
Or first su to root and enter "yast -i <packagename>" where <packagename> is the name of the package.

So for example, to install raidtools which is on the installation disk in the package file "raidtools-1.00.3-234.x86_64.rpm", you could enter: sudo yast -i raidtools

If the file is one you downloaded and not on your installation disks, you need to include the full filename.
For example: sudo yast -i libdvdread-0.9.5-0.pm.3.x86_64.rpm

Another way is to use the rpm command:
sudo rpm -Uhv libdvdread-0.9.5-0.pm.3.x86_64.rpm

The last two ways will install the package if there aren't any dependencies, but the YOU program won't be able to apply security updates, and you could create dependency problems, because the libraries you supplied are from a different source.
