ieee1394 Capture and Edit: Kino and Cinelerra

I have a DV Camcorder. I can use Kino to capture video from it. However, editing is a problem.

When I try to play the captured AVI or MOV in Kino, it just zips through the movie with no sound as if I pressed fast forward. I can edit it down and cut bits out, but it becomes very hit and miss. When I output the file as an MPEG, it's fine, so it is just the practicality of why I can't get Kino to play back at normal speed?

When I capture as MOV, then try to edit the movie in Cinelerra, I can't get past first base, it will load the file, then it refuses to Play or Display the file in any way at all.

I am using Mandrake 9.1 and loaded these programs from rpms, are there auxilliary programs I am missing?
