IE6 for Linux with ie4linux -- Installs but freezes

Dear friends:

I discovered ie4linux by accident by search on Google. I have succeeded in installing it using his instructions online at:

http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/

The prerequisite programs are available on our Synaptic repositories. They are: wine (and perhaps also wine-devel) and cabextract. No need to install them from source. ie4linux works automatically. Only problem: IE launches perfectly but then after setting the home page it freezes. And every time I launchit, from the desktop or from /home/user/bin, it freezes. And, as you probably know, it also includes the latest Flash 8. If this little bug could be solved, we would have full access to IE6 for free. I wrote to the author but received a permanent error message. The letter is available below. Would one of our experts be willing to try to solve this problem and give us IE6?

Thank you all so much.

What a thrill to know that through you IE6 is available on Linux! You
have done us a great service.

I followed your instructions precisely. I downloaded and installed Wine
through Synaptic (version 0.9.1-4), then cabextract (version 1.1.-1),
also through our Synaptic. I then downloaded and installed ie4linux. I
then installed it as instructed. No problem as you can see below.

BUT, it turns out that there is a problem. I click on the IE6 icon on
the desktop and IE was launched flawlessly. I then went to
http://www.nytimes.com and set it up my home in Internet Options. And
then suddenly IE froze and every time I launch it with the desktop icon
or from ~/bin/ie6 I get the same sad results. IE6 freezes every time.

Would so very much appreciate your help with this last stage of install.

Thank you so very much.

/me tries to calm down a little.

Ok, please explain why you need IE. I really can't see a reason why you might need it, but I'm trying to understand. Maybe I can convince you that there is another browser that runs natively on linux that will suit your purposes?

I don't understand why you would need IE on linux too! Mozilla, firefox, Opera and Galeon are great browsers.

Dear friends:

I have just recently installed an all-Linux system on both of my hard disks (hda and hdb), so I obviously value and prefer my native Linux browsers. But obviously it must occurr to you that there are times, especially when doing web design (which I often do), that you need to see what the site looks like in IE. There may be other reasons, but that is good enough.

Thank you.

Benjamin

Dear friends:

For those of you who are interested, I got a hot tip that turns out to be right on the money: ie4linux works fine with IE 5.5. So, instead of choosing IE6, which freezes, just choose the IE 5.5 option. Works fine, including full configuration under Internet Options. A really nice deal. Even comes with its own desktop icon.

You're right, that is a pretty good reason to have IE, it had never occured to me. I'm glad to see you got it working, though. Good luck.
