IDE Confusion

I am trying to recompile my kernel on an Asus A7V266-E (on-board promise raid controller). I installed Mandrake 9 and it comes back with the hard drive being hde, but when I recompile the kernel it tells me at boot that it's hda (which it should be) I thought it might have been a flaw with Mandrake but other distributions are seeing it as hde. I have tried making a symbolic link but that doesn't work. i have tried moving the hard drive to the promise controller and disabling it. That doesn't work so I am hoping there is something that I have to specify in the kernel.

Is there any reason that you need this to be hda? Usually when drives are hooked up to controllers they become hde, hdg and so on. My RAID controller causes my drives to be hdg. With mandrake your hda/hdb... are just symbolic links as it is, so changing that shouldn't be a problem. However, I'm guessing that when you recompiled your kernel you either left out devfs support, raid support, or specific support for your raid controller so it acted as if it wasn't even there.

Did you compile raid support into your kernel?
