Id "x" respawning too fast

I'm trying to install Mandrake8.1,and everything goes okay until I reboot and get this message on the screen with the "squarish Tux". Id "x" respawning too fast : disabled for 5 minutes. The screen flashes for a minute and I get the same message. I don't have this problem installing the Linux Central copy of 8.1,but I want the support from Mandrake. Any ideas how to get through this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,mikef

boot to run level three - at the LILO prompt type linux 3, the run the utility to set up xfree86

Thank you for the info! Just before I posted this I ordered Mandrake 8.2 which should be arriving any minute now! (Ihope) My Mandrake 8.1 has given me fits in the past too. Glad to see your into LinuxQuestion.com! You've helped me out in another site before. I think it was about an onboard graphics card that definately did not like Linux. Thanks again!!! Mike Fraley
