icq for linux and icq port

Dear all,

Can anybody tell men what's the best soft for ICQ chatting program?

I also want to know that port ICQ uses and which port used for file transferring in ICQ?

Thanks,
askar

There is no `best' ICQ client--quality is in the eye of the beholder.

Since you haven't given us your quality criteria, I can't say what's the best *for you*, but worth trying out is: gaim, centericq, icqlite. I've tried the two first (sticking with the 2nd until), and I was very satisfied w. both.

centericq currently connects me to login.icq.com:5190; I wouldn't know about file transfers though.

But why not use, you know, the File Transfer Protocol? That's what it's there for ;)

People are going to tell you different things about the "best" client to use. Some suggestions are Gaim and Licq.

Thanks to all.

I understand that the "best" is different depending on the person.

You gave me some options and I will try and decide which is best for me :)

Thanks again.

you're welcome.

Btw, `icqlite' was only IIRC. I didn't (it seems)--google only finds (.exe)s. But yeah, try 'em out and see what fits you.

icq needs java, at least thatīs what my boy says. He wants to use icq to chat to his friends. He tried to download java for Linux, but it wouldnīt install. Iīm not there to do it for him. Does Gaim come with all thatīs necessary? We are using Fedora 3 at the mo.
Any tips would be welcomed!

If you install KDE, you can find KOPETE there for chatting in icq.
I'm using debian, when I installed Gaim it also works for icq without any problem.

One doesn't need Java to chat via ICQ. Maybe to chat on ICQ with a client written in java (-applet), but not generally. ICQ is just a protocol, after all.
