icons in linux

couple questions:

-is there a way to use .ico icon files in linux (maybe a program that converts them to .png or .xpm)?

-is there a program for linux that will extract the icons from Windoze .exe files (or other Windoze files for that matter)?

About your first question, I believe that gimp can convert .ico to <what you want>. About extracting icons from Windows.exe I don't know... though, you could easily make your customs with gimp :)

Try the Windows program Resource Hacker to retrieve icons and other bitmaps from Windows libraries (.dll's) and executables. Then you can convert the extracted images using the Gimp.

thanks for the input. i found a freeware program called Icon Extractor by JoneSoft to extract the windows icons under windows, and both the gimp and ImageMagick seemed to convert the icons. it would be nice if there was a program under linux that would extract icons from windows .exe and .dll files, though. i'm trying to be as completely M$ free as possible.

icoutilities, or something like that is support converting windows icons to linux, as well as extracting icons from exe files and .dll files all in linux. I couldnt get the program to compile on mandrake 9.2 even after installing an older lib it asked about. YMMV. You can find it by searching on freshmeat for (icon convert). Looks like the program was updated around nov03 and its supposed to support the transparency in xp icons. Thats mainly what Im after. I tried the gimp and imagemagik for the conversion but i couldnt get it to save the transparency. I tried adding alpha in the gimp but i couldnt figure how to do it to the whole icon instead of the pre-configured gradients.

If anyone knows how to do this a follow up would be GREAT!

Hey people, I just figured something out rather interesting. I was reading Groking the Gimp, and noticed that the opacity slider will adjust the transparancy level, :-) Gee, I feel smart, there it was right in front of me all the time and I never thought to use it. But, I'm in preschool when it comes to graphics editing anyway..
