icedtea plugin vs openjdk


I know both of them are open source.OK.
But,For what icedtea-plugin is used.Can we run java in web browser without it.
Why is icedtea-plugin used for?
Can we run java in web browser with only openjdk jre only?

OpenJDK was not originally entirely open source, and I think the browser plug-in is still closed. IcedTea was started to provide a completely open-source solution. Both work! You can read all about them at Wikipedia.
