iCal format... license?

I'd like to use Mozilla Sunbird /and/ Apple's Calendar.app, which both use the iCal format for it's calendars. Apple's playing nice and allowing exporting in there calendar app, but is the format safe to adopt? is it a open / free (standard?) format?

thanks!

The iCalendar/vCalendar format is an open standard - you can get the RFC here. It should be as safe to use as other open formats and protocols.

Amusingly (or not), iCalendar is not to be confused with Apple's iCal program that uses the iCalendar format.

Hope that helps. :)
