i915 module

im installing gentoo on a dell laptop and when i run X i get the error
i915 module does not exist
failed to load i915
disabling dri

how can i fix this? is this a module i need to activate on kernel if it is where is it cause i tried looking for it and i cant find it

it is being started cause your xorg.conf file is telling it that you ahve an intel graphics card, pretty new one too. you have to build this as a module in the kernel, or install the intel package from the site, however, a heads up for you. i have tried numerous times to install the driver on the intel site and it errors out with a 2.6 kernel. i have installed it on several 2.4 kernels with no problems but the 2.5s and 2.6s dont work witht he driver. nwo the driver is old, so,, i tried the snapshots, and they didnt work. so just use the kernel module. also i might suggest that while you are in there, messing with the kernel, you might want to modularize the i830 dri driver too. sometimes it si needed, and sometimes not. so wont hurt.
