Unfortunately I think you have to buy the full version of Adobe Acrobat to be able to edit PDF files (which presumably only runs on Windows).

The only free way I know of to do PDF --> DOC would be to take screenshots of the PDF and use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) sofware to convert it back into text. It could be very time-consuming for a large PDF though.

You can use ghostscript to convert pdf to ps (postscript) and ps to pdf. So, convert the pdf to ps, then open the ps in openoffice and save as doc.

Could you elaborate on this procedure please?
I have tried to do this and OpenOffice opens the ps file as plain text, ie all the postscript commands etc, none of the intended format as one would see in a pdf or ps viewer, or as would be printed by a ps printer.
How does one get OpenOffice to open the ps with the intended format, images etc so that it can then be saved as a doc with all the formating intact?

Cheers,
