Well.. what format are you trying to reproduce? You could use RealPlayer for Linux. Or you could give more details and I might be able to help you install mplayer. I particularly like it and have found it very useful (It took me ages to get installed so I guess I'm not the only one :D )

if you can't get mplayer to work tell us the REAL error messages......

and mplayer is available as an rpm set too... just look at the homepage

Have you tried the non-GUI version?

mplayer yourvideo.avi

Post the output / error messages you receive!

Use xine. It's great.

roy_tan711 10-31-2003 08:18 AM

try xine http://xinehq.de/
or mplayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu/

i like xine personally :D

Mplayer is the best i've come across but it really does require a compile. Ogle and xine suck arse (sorry to all you ogle and xine fans). They've never once gotten near mplayer's performance. There is another one, though. It's called VideoLAN client (or vlc). It's not as good as mplayer but seems to be better than xine or ogle although I haven't used it much. There are rpms available from their website (www.videolan.org) so it shouldn't be too hard to install.

I use xine.. its perfect for all my movie needs..

Kroppus 10-31-2003 12:36 PM

Both Xine and Mplayer works great with me.
Just remember to get the latest win32 drivers at the same time.
I forgot about them and i couldn't get my divx5 movies to play at all :(
Now i use mplayer, if that don't work i try xine.
:)
Sow now i can see all my movies apart from the ones that's so called "locked" *swears at wmv and wma files*
Anyone has an ide for watching them or converting them into something else?

adz 10-31-2003 07:50 PM

I can watch wmv files. Is there some sort of encryption on them?

Allen614 10-31-2003 07:55 PM

Look for a RPM with the package name gmplayer. It's the gui frontend for mplayer and uses the command "gmplayer" instead of "mplayer".

Kroppus 10-31-2003 08:28 PM

@ adz
Yepps. They're encrypted.
Since i blocked mediaplayer on my xp box from gong online, i can't even watch them there.
Well *smiles* at the moment i can't do anything on my xp.
*grins*
Now my box is all Linux. :)

adz 10-31-2003 08:46 PM

That's wierd. Why would they be encrypted? I can't imagine that being worthwhile for anyone. They can't all be encrypted. I've definetly played some .wmv files with mplayer.

Kroppus 11-01-2003 07:12 AM

Encrypted or watever you want to call it.
They're the sort with tracking and stuff inside the files.
And they also want to open some webpages when you open them.
You also need to enable all the tracking and usage features in mediaplayer to see them.
I call that encryption, since you can't wath the,m without giving microsoft and the creators of that full info of what you do with your pc. What music you play and moies you watch.
It's anyway a breach on privacy.
