I need to download like a maniac!

Things is going to change in my life. I am moving to a place with no internet access for one whole year. I always wanted to change from windows to linux and did that this week insted of waiting over a year.
However, I am going to have a hard time getting software. Therefore I wonder if you know any place to leach like hell from? Like a ftp with a collection of software. I got 40gb free space. I don't want to miss packages when not connected and I want to have access to most software I may need.
Crazy request perhaps, but worth a try. :-)
All suggestions on what I should do to prepare for the internetlessnes I appriciated!

Sorry, I have no idea of good ftp sites. However, if you're going somewhere that has a postal service, you could subscribe to Linux Format (DVD edition - it has more software) and get regular updates and softwares that way.

Erm if you're gone for a year I'm certain you'll miss a heck of a lot.

Surely you just need to get the latest bugfixing stable releases of stuff?

http://ibiblio.org has an ftp server with 1000s upon 1000s of software packages, linux iso's and anything else you could ever want...it also mirrors the ftp servers of about 20-30 different linux distro's.

You could spend weeks sorting through it. Just click the links "public ftp archive" 'linux distribution archive" et al at the top of the page.

From the website: "over 171 gigabytes of Linux programs and documentation freely available for download via FTP and/or WWW access."

Use the money you're saving on the Net connection to subscribe to a magazine and get it delivered by pony express to way out where you're living.....that's assuming of course there's electricity in them there cabins :)

hum, at my opinion, it's VERY hard to play with Linux without internet... you need aps first you can't get anywhere else (this is the problem with OpenSource, it's only on the internet). Then you need howtos and docs to make some things work, again, this is only on the internet...
I wishyou good lucky, but I'm pretty suyre you'll miss something
