I need help with BitchX installation on RedHat
I have just installed Red Hat 8.0 on my XP1800+ system. I have downloaded Bitchx from BitchX.org and I hit a brick wall.
When I got to the "type cd ./BitchX" I just get "bash: cd: ./BitchX: Not a directory". I have been told I have the alpha and I need the .i386. Now I have downloaded "gtkBitchX-1.0c18-2.i386.rpm" and I have no idea where to go from here (as I have no instructions) I have been using Windows for my entire computer history(bar a few editing commands editing an irc server) and therefore I don't know any major linux commands. I only installed this yesterday and got a run down on a few commands but nothing major. I know I sound like a total dweeb and not 1337 at all, but please if you can help I would be much appricated, |

Unless you really want to learn bash (and by all means do), go ahead and do your admin work in "mc" until you get the hang of it. Fire up a terminal (should be located on your taskbar), also known as a shell. If you can't find it, hit <Control><Alt><F2> to get into an unused tty. Hit <Control><Alt><F7> to get back into Kde (or Gnome). Login as yourself, "su" to root (type in "su", then your root password) and then type in "mc". This starts up "Midnight Commander" which is more or less a "Norton Commander" clone. Now navigate your way to your new .rpm file and hit enter with it hi-lited. This brings up the install and upgrade options. Pick install, hit <Control><O> (ohhh, not zero) to hide mc. If it gripes at you, try the upgrade option. Or you can do it by executing the proper rpm command (as root) in the same directory as where your rpm file resides.: "rpm -i gtkBitchX-1.0c18-2.i386.rpm" The easy way would be to type in: "rpm -i gtkB" and then hit TAB (if it beeps at you, hit TAB again. Try it). Hint: try the up and down arrows as well when you are in a shell (terminal). And of course you can always get more information on a command by entering: "man <command>" in a terminal. e.g., "man rpm". John |
Hey thanks John. I did get it working (Did exactly the same as I did to start with and it worked) As someone said "Welcome to Linux" :)
But your ideas were very helpful. I have installed it all but I have a white background, and I can't figure how to edit(or what file more like) to edit the server, nick, colours and such. I am in Windows at the moment and can't even get BitchX to work in Windows. Looks like I am not spose to have it. Other people can and I use it but not on my own machine :) |

Hmmm, did you see this? Be careful... http://www.linux-tech.com/pipermail/...ly/000522.html As for docs, you might want to start here: http://www.bitchx.com/docs.html John |
All those cdocs on Linux.org and .com are useless.
That or I am just not able to understand them. I am not sure of what file to edit to set default nicks, servers, and colours. I have installed BitchX on both winxp and Linux and am stuck at the same spot with both OS's. hehe so close to giving up :) |

I took a look at them as well, and I would have to agree with you, too complicated. FWIW, I use KSirc (it comes with Kde). John |
Ever thought about trying X-Chat?
