I need help installing linux on an external usb drive

i have one laptop...
i want to install linux on usb hard drive...
pliz tell me procedure in detail....

What kind of laptop?
Which Linux?
Have you installed Linux on any other system?

hi
i have HP COMPAQ nx-6120
and i want to install red hat linux 9 on usb hard drive..


yes i have installed linux but on internal hard drive...
pbm is that while installing linux usb hard drive,it is not detecting the usb hard drive while doing the partitioning of /,/boot etc...

Don't use RH9. It's old and out of date and won't detect the latest hardware. If you like Red Hat based systems you'll probably want to use the latest Fedora Core release.

In this thread from the Fedora Forums there's a post on installing Fedora to an external hard drive. I've never tried it so I can't verify the information, but it looks like what you want. I bet if you Googled around a bit you could find some other guides too.
