I need a reccomendation for good dvd writing and authoring and ripping software
HI, I am hoping someone can reccommend some good software for burning dvd's and authoring them. Also a good ripper/decoder would be useful. Ideally very easy to install or with step by step instructions 'cos I am a newbie. Many thanks in advance. (I can alreday do this through windows but need the stability and speed of linux)

Burning -> k3b as a frontend to cdrtools and cdrecord-ProDVD. It's like Nero.
Ripping -> Haven't tried any of them, but the options I know of are:
1) Drip.
2) Transcode.
3) Mencoder. (from Mplayer)
4) Ffmpeg.
5) DVD::Rip.
Edit: Now that I think about it, k3b can probably rip DVDs too.

thanks greyweather. I have used k3b for writing cd's, just had a look and it says something about cd ripping and encoding video, but nothing seems to suggest it can handle dvd's, tried to access the k3b documentation but it loads up kde help instead. I'm in need of a program that can convert say an .avi file to dvd format (.vob) and then burn this project to dvd so it will play in a normal dvd player.

also is there a good guide to installing programs under linux as I tried to install a program before and it was going on about compling, tar files, "." files and oOo's this almost scared me to death and I did not muster the courage to boot into linux again for 3 weeks. Sad, I know but then I'm used to bieng spoon fed under windows and having to do nothing more than double click the install file and keep pressing next!

DVD ripping with k3b:
http://k3b.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/i.../videoencoding
I think the ability to mess with DVDs isa relatively new feature in k3b so you probably need to upgrade from the version you are using.
k3b might actually use dvd+rw-tools instead of cdrtools-proDVD like I first said. I don't have a dvd writer myself so I'm working off of secondhand info, sorry.

That's all your supposed to do under any os. There should never be a need for a user to do anything more to get a program installed than double click and choose a few options. That's what computers are for--to do the repetitive work for you. There's no reason to make you do the work when the programmer could write an install routine for you. Asking anyone to do the make/configure is pathetic.
