I need a open source pdf editor that runs on linux


I have some forms I have to fill out and the only way to get them is in pdf format

and I pretty much have to install from source

Are they true PDF forms? If so then you should be able to read and fill in the forms with most readers like evince, okular, inkscape or of course Adobe.

Both Acroread (Linux version from Adobe) and Okular (if you're using KDE as your DE) can handle pdf forms. They let you fill them in and save the results as a pdf file.

One can fill in PDF forms written to be filled in; some aren't. They all used not to be.
