I need a couple of answers... before i install gentoo..
Hi all,
my primary hardisk has WinXp/Redhat 9 which i dont wanna touch.. I am planning to install Gentoo on a new hard-disk [6gb] ... and set it up as a slave.. eventually.. My question's are 1)is it a good idea to set up a gentoo on a 6gb hard-disk .. i am planning to have kde and other stuff.... 2) When i am installing Gentoo i wanna set it up as primary for a few days[coz i dont want it to touch my other hard-disk] and later remove it and put it as a slave... In the above case when i set up my gentoo as slave.. what configuration changes should i make apart from editing the grub.conf on my redhat 9 system???? Thanks in advance... |
I have /root and /home on seperate partitions, and made my /home about 4.5 gigs, so I think you'll have enough space for kde. just make sure that you regularly clean /var/tmp/portage and /usr/portage/distfiles, so that it won't give you a "no disk space" error while emerging things. Do it after the initial install before you start emerging KDE (btw, it takes a while).
Not sure I understand your other question. Are you physically removing your hard drive? If you're worried about messing up your primary drive, cause I'm sure there's a better way to keep it safe than removing the drive. The two locations I can think of that you'd need to change /hda to /hdb and vice versa would be grub.conf and /etc/fstab hope this helps Dswissmiss |
Agreed. Gentoo lived on my box on a 4gig drive for nearly 1/2 year and I survived. Clean out the distfiles and you'll be fine

Oops, I mean't I made /root 4 gigs  ;)

A Big Thanks to Dswissmiss and Vectordrake for ur suggestions...
I will go ahead and give Gentoo a try.. I am so sick of facing dependency problems in RH9, hoping Portage will be the answer.... |
If it isn't, you can go back to a binary distro like Deb (but i have tried most of them and Gentoo's got me hooked).
